05. EXPRESSIONIST GRAPHIC ART FROM GERMANY,
22 July - 10 August 1980

An exhibition of "Expressionist Graphic Art from Germany" was held in the Central Gallery and in Galleries A and B from 22 July - 10 August 1980. A total of 121 works were displayed.

The following artists were represented: Max Beckmann, Heinrich Campendonk, Otto Dix, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Franz Marc, Otto Müller, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Christian Rohlfs and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

The exhibition gave viewers an excellent understanding of the development of German Expressionism, including its initial stages and development, as well as the main differences between `Die Brücke" group of artists (1905-1913) and "Der Blaue Reiter" group of artists (1911-1914); the exhibition also dealt with the influence of the First World War on German Expressionism, and the aims of the movement during the 1920's. The connection between German Expressionism and primitive art as well as folk art was clearly seen, as was the importance to German Expressionism of the way that society took a stand on certain issues.

The exhibition was mounted by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen and was arranged in cooperation with the Goethe Institute.
