Häme Museum is housed in a palace named Milavida that was built by Peter von Nottbeck as a private residence. The original building designed by architect K.A. Wrede was completed in 1898 on Näsinkallio rock which was almost totally bare of trees at the time. Today the museum is surrounded by lush foliage. In 1995 the artist Marra Lampi finished a work of environmental art, the Milavida, on the northern side of the museum.

Häme Museum is the oldest museum in Tampere. It was founded in 1904 and opened to the public in 1908. Its exhibitions shed light on various aspects of the culture of peasantry and the gentry. More variety is added by displays of art, photographs and industrial art based on historical, provincial and city-related themes. The museum organises various public events and special theme days as part of its exhibition programme. During the Christmas and Easter periods, programmes for daycare and school children are provided.
